Most people have tried, at some point, to be more aware of how they feel. The problem with informal self-reflection is that it is vulnerable to exactly the cognitive biases it is trying to address. We remember dramatic emotional events and forget ordinary ones. We construct narratives that make sense of our past selves rather than accurately recording how we actually felt. And we are particularly bad at noticing gradual drift โ the slow accumulation of small stressors or small positives that genuinely changes our baseline.
Mood tracking solves this by externalising the process. Instead of trying to remember how your week went, you have a data point for every day. The difference is the difference between trying to remember the weather last month and having read a thermometer every morning.
UCLA neuroscientist Matthew Lieberman's research has consistently demonstrated what he calls the "affect labelling" effect: simply naming an emotional state reduces its intensity.
In brain imaging studies, participants who labelled their emotions showed reduced activity in the amygdala (the threat-detection and emotional reactivity centre) and increased activity in the prefrontal cortex (responsible for regulation and rational response). The act of naming shifts your relationship to the emotion โ from being inside it to observing it.
This is not just theory. It is why talking to a therapist helps even when they say very little, and why writing in a journal makes people feel better even when they never re-read it. The labelling itself is the mechanism.

Habit researcher James Clear's work on habit loops identifies four components of behaviour change: cue, craving, response, and reward. Missing a day now has a cost โ breaking the streak โ which means the habit becomes self-reinforcing in a way that a simple reminder cannot achieve.
